great product with lots of features, October 3, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Qnap TS-212-US 2-Bay USB 2.0 NAS Server (Personal Computers) I purchased this NAS and installed two 3TB harddrives in it without any problem. It provides a lot of features that actually work well. Some of the menus are a little complicated and take a little getting used to for finding exactly what I want, but once I found them, they worked as expected. I like that this allows me to join the device to a small Active Directory environment for authentication. The only limitation I found was that in order for the multimedia station service to work, I had to enable the web hosting service. Not a big deal, but not again, not overly intuitive either. I also implemented the iSCSI service to provide remote storage for a few virtual machines and provide clustering capabilities that would normally be included in very expensive SAN solutions.
The hardware installation requires installing a few screws and cables to connect the hard drives. It would have been nice to have this work with a toolless setup instead, but I don't plan to swap the... Read more

good quality and great for streaming, December 30, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Qnap TS-212-US 2-Bay USB 2.0 NAS Server (Personal Computers) I have had the TS-212 installed now for about 2 months and feel very good about my purchase. My main goal was to get everything off of a power hungry windows PC that was on 24/7 for media center and streaming. I also had a HP media Vault that it was backin up too. Now I just have the Qnap with my PC's folders pointing to the QNAP for file access and using XBOX 360's and APPLE TV Gen 1 with XBMC for streaming. I like this setup very much as I have not had any problems with streaming from the QNAP.
Coming from a HP media Vault for backup this is a big step in features but did not take long to learn. Please keep in mind that during your search if you want more 3rd party apps for streaming you will need to purchase an intel QNAP for products such as PLEX. The QNAP TS-212 can only use Twonky for Upnp. Also if you plan on hooking this up to XMBC for streaming you need to set it up under Windows SMB in XBMC instead of upnp. it will not allow for the Movies library for some reason... Read more

The QNAP has a ton of features, only some of which I have used, but it is quiet and works like a champ. The family stores large files on it from both Mac & PC and it's real simple.
When I first got it I upgraded the firmware and ran into a problem - probably because I screwed up a step - and I was able to get QNAP tech support on the phone and they walked me through the recovery process in less than 10 minutes. No data was lost.
I'm happy with the product and with QNAP's tech support. Recommended.
