Maybe best eSATA for price at time I bought it, September 22, 2010 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Iomega 1 TB eSATA 3 GB/USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34280 (Personal Computers) I probably use this a little differently than most people. I have several computers and a network NAS (Synology DS109) that is used for central storage, so instead of backing up an individual computer, I am backing up my NAS. I had previously been backing up to a USB 2.0 drive that finally died. I didn't want to spend too much but needed 1TB, wanted the eSATA speed, but the option of using USB if eSATA didn't workout (the Synology runs on a Linux kernel and I wasn't sure of compatibility). So this one popped up on Amazon as being the proper capacity, option of eSATA or USB, waranty, really good reviews, and a great price for all that.
So far so good, backed up 250 GB (200,000+ files) from the NAS in about 6 hours. Not as fast as I thought, but I don't use any of the included software and the bottleneck could be on my NAS. Software not compatible with Win 7, January 27, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Iomega 1 TB eSATA 3 GB/USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34280 (Personal Computers) The drive works great, fast SATA connection instead of USB is a big plus. But I bought the drive in part for the "Never Down" software which is supposed to back up your system drive. It's "included" by which they mean it's not actually in the box, you have to download it. It wouldn't install and then Iomega told me it's not compatible with Windows 7 (which has been out for a long time now). I told them the box lists Windows 7 as being compatible, they said what that really means is it's compatible with the drive, not necessarily the software. Apparently the box means whatever they want it to mean.
Bottom line, don't buy this for the software.

Great storage option - Needs tweaking and NO SLEEP MODE, November 15, 2010 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Iomega 2 TB USB 2.0 eSATA 3 Gbits Professional Hard Drive - 34527 (Personal Computers) I recently purchased this desktop drive (2GB) to use in conjunction with an Asus OPlay! media player (which, might I add, is fantastic). Both use eSATA (external SATA connection). I chose this type of connection, rather than USB 2.0 (which it also has), because I was going to be transferring a huge amount of data from my PC to this drive. eSATA claims to have 'burst' rates of up to 115MB/sec but average about 58 MB/sec (this must be on a REALLY new and FASTER machine). USB 2.0 runs typically about half this rate. When I received the item, I set up the drive as eSATA, through a bracket on the back of my PC (which is not typically recommended, but I didn't want to drop more dough on another PCI card). Changed setting under BIOS to use the drive as RAID, but did not format and left it as FAT32 (possible an issue - read on). I have my main hard disks as NTFS. Seemed to be working well, but was shocked when I went to transfer a large file (approx. 3.45 GB). It was taking quite a while and... Read more
