5.0 out of 5 stars For technophobes and power-users alike: VERY easy to use, yet very powerful too, January 1, 2012

My hobby is photography, and over the last 20 years I've accumulated a large (1.6Tb) catalog of family photos and videos (I've digitised all my slides, negatives and video tapes in order to preserve them). They are hence very precious to me and I am fairly paranoid about losing them to a hard disk failure, so have over the years invested in a series of ever-larger external hard drives to back my collection up to.

Recently I did have a multi-drive solution ( Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition 2TB USB 2.0 (WDH2U20000N)) - and it worked great initially (for a year or so) but as time passed the interface (USB 2.) was a bottleneck, it's a point solution (not on the home network - I have to plug it in to any PC I want to back up), and it only holds two hard-drives (my data needs grew too fast for just two drives). I looked at... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding backup device, January 30, 2012
This review is from: Western Digital 4 TB WD Sentinel DX4000 Small Office Storage Server (Personal Computers)
Adam Hems' review does the heavy lifting with its thorough description of the Sentinel and its features. I got an early one, so I've been using it to back up about 15 client PCs for almost six months - it's worked flawlessly. It's very small and quiet, so you can put it anywhere you've got an available Ethernet connection, and it "just works." I would not hesitate to recommend the Sentinel or to buy another one myself. Check out the video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice for one DX4000, may be complicated for more than one, March 24, 2012

First off, we love this box. We got into some hot water using it but that could have been avoided. Initial setup was very easy, we added it to our homegroup and started moving files. No problem. We're using it as a video server as well as for general backup. As a video server it rocks. Just for fun I streamed 3 videos off it simultaneously to different computers, and they all ran perfectly. CPU on the DX4000 ran at about 6%, no sweat at all. For a little processor the atom rocks. Then we got a second DX4000 for added capacity...

Some of these boxes arrive pre-configured, some don't. If yours does, you won't have an opportunity to determine a name for it. If you have more than one DX4000 running and both arrived pre-configured then you have some problems as both are named WDSENTINEL. You can't change the name because the system will tell you that Certificate Authority Service is installed. Decommissioning CA is, in turn, astonishingly complex. WD seems to have made some... We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the Western Digital Sentinel, as this is not the typical experience with the product. We understand your concerns related to the naming of the device, as it pertains to the Windows Certificate Authority Service. Although the device is by default named "WDSentinel", upon running the initial administration setup on the device, there is the opportunity to change the default name of the device to one of your choosing. This is a one-time option, which adheres to Microsoft guidelines and regulations for the Windows Server 2008 R2 OS. We would recommend first disconnecting the initial WD Sentinel from your network before proceeding with the install of a second WD Sentinel, to avoid any possible naming and/or IP address conflicts, until the initial setup is complete. All WD Sentinels ship pre-configured with the Windows Operating system pre-installed, and the hardware set for either RAID 1 (4TB), or RAID 5 (8 & 12 TB).
For reference, here is a link to the main product page and User Manual for the WD Sentinel, which will provide basic features, information/support, and troubleshooting for the unit.
